MONUMENTAL AND OUTSTANDING FOUR-PIECE BIRDSEYE MAPLE CARVED BEDROOM SUITE. The 19th Century four-piece set consists of half tester bed, drop center vanity with mirror, one door mirrored front armoire and carved table. 1) Half tester bed heavily carved all in birdseye maple having a headboard with attached half tester top. Headboard with large carved raised panel horizontal section decorated with inset carved leaves. Crest having an arch with foliate and flower carving under which is a raised panel with relief carved flower and berry vine. Full round columns beside the crest with carved column tops support a cornice carved half tester top having crest carved with leaves and central wood cabochon and leaf carved center. The edge is heavily carved with flowers and leaves. Foot board heavily carved with horizontal panels, carved foliate sections and a rectangular rounded top crest. Posts having decorative molding at base, raised panel bottom section and spiral carved vine decorated top section. Original side rails with carved scroll and leaf corners. Bed is held together with eight bed bolts which are not present. NOTE: The removable finials from the foot board have written on the top of post and bottom of finials names and places of people that presumably have slept on the bed. Names include people from Vermont, New York, New Jersey, New York City, Ohio and England amongst others. SIZE: Bed is 10’5” h to top of crest of the tester x 74-1/2” at widest at top of cornice. Inside of rails is 61” w x 81” l. Foot board is 43” h. Drop Center Vanity is 109-1/2” h x 63-1/2” w x 27” d. Armoire is 122-1/2” h x 75” w x 34-1/2” d. Table is 41” h x 36” w x 24” d. 2) Drop center vanity: In two parts. Bottom section having a center white marble over a large drawer and two side drawers. Having a carved molded edge, paneled front drawers with carved leaves and a multiple stepped molded base. Top section having a central 5’ x 26-1/2” beveled mirror flanked by two small angled mirrors at the back of small alcoves decorated with carved column top pillars and decorative leaf carving. Shelves above support two tall full round columns ending in deep carved capitals supporting the tall crest which has similar carving to bed. Side elements with foliate carving having round discs for mounting lights. 3) Massive armoire : Single door wardrobe fitted with a 66” x 29” bevel edged mirror with decorative molded frame. When opened reveals a segmented interior for hanging and storing clothes. Flanking the door are round columns with heavily carved capitals and side angled corner panels with leaf and other carving. The two panel sides inset with birdseye maple panels. Top crest area with similar but larger carving that is seen in the drop center chest and the bed. 4) Table: One drawer center table with rounded molded edge rectangular top having a frieze containing one long drawer and inset leaf carving which is on all four sides including the drawer front. Supported by four tapered legs with decorative carving ending in four porcelain and brass casters. A bottom shelf with decorative carving acts as stretcher. The primary wood is maple and birdseye maple. Secondary woods include oak, poplar and pine. Someone has suggested that this could be a set made by Mitchells & Rammelsberg. CONDITION: BED Headboard has ended out 8-1/2” bottom of legs. Original base molding to this area is present. Electric switch has been added to the bottom part of headboard. There are only very, very minor imperfections. VANITY: Marble has been repaired. Overall very good with only minor imperfections. Armoire is very good with only minor imperfections. NOTE: OVERALL CONDITION: This is a spectacular set in a warm honey brown finish with extensive carving that is in wonderful condition and we can only find very few insignificant problems. This will disassemble to the point at which it will fit into a 14’ box truck. 9-72569 ($65,000.00-$100,000.00)
