A ONE HUNDRED TWENTY-EIGHT PIECE LEBOLT & CO STERLING SILVER FLATWARE SERVICE, MARKED, CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, EARLY 20TH CENTURY, : A ONE HUNDRED TWENTY-EIGHT PIECE LEBOLT & CO STERLING SILVER FLATWARE SERVICE, MARKED, CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, EARLY 20TH CENTURY, a twelve place settings service, each with hand hammered decoration throughout and an applied "STE" silver-gilt monogram, verso stamped "STERLING / HAND MADE LEBOLT, " hollowwares stamped "STERLING, " next to a lozenge enclosing "L, " comprising twelve dinner forks, twelve salad forks, twelve shrimp cocktail/oyster forks, twelve hollowware dinner knives with silver plated blunt blades, twelve butter knives, twelve soup spoons, twelve dessert spoons, twelve grapefruit spoons, twelve demitasse spoons, three serving spoons, a long stemmed nut spoon with pierced bowl, a sauce ladle, a small cream ladle, an ice-cream slice, a pastry/jelly server, a pair of baluster form salt/pepper shakers with pierced lids, verso stamped profile lion supporting lozenge "L" above "LEBOLT / HANDMADE / 648, " a small circular salt bowl, verso matching stamps numbered 498, two varying sizes salt spoons, verso stamped "LEBOLT STERLING, " a set of three miniature barrel form salt/pepper shakers, one lacking lid, verso stamped "MADE IN U. S. A / STERLING SILVER, " enclosing "S. C. S. Co. , " a hollowware meat carving fork and knife, a hollowware meat carving knife sharpener, each stamped "STERLING, " and lozenge "L, " total approximate weight: 129. 0625 troy oz (not including hollowwares). Note: LEBOLT & COMPANY - one of Chicago, Illinois' longest family owned silversmith companies that started when J. Meyer Lebolt (American 1868-1944) opened a silversmithing department in his jewelry store in 1912. This department focused on handwrought hollowwares at first such as tea sets, trays, bowls, pitchers, etc then added lines of handwrought flatwares and eventually had a sizable amount of silversmiths as well as designers employed. The earliest marks for silver were "LEBOLT / HAND MADE, " which later was altered to "LEBOLT / HAND BEATEN. " Debolt's Art & Crafts style silverwares were retailed in Chicago on State St, New York on Fifth Ave, and during the 1920s a retail establishment was opened in Paris on the Rue LaFayette but appears to have been primarily for pearls and jewelry. Condition Each in good condition with normal light surface wear and expected worn gilding on monograms, a few light patches of surface tarnish and rust on the meat cutting utensil blades.
