19th C. Indo-Persian Etched Steel Shield - Dhal: Central Asia, Pakistan/northern India, Indo-Persian period, ca. 19th century CE. A lovely etched steel shield known as a dhal, a form of buckler, or small shield made to be gripped in the fist with a central handle behind the boss. The round shield is convex, with a rolled edge and four large bosses; the two leather handles are bolted to the back of these bosses. These handles are covered in fabric to cushion the hand. The etched surface features a profusion of amazing imagery: elephants, birds, warriors on horseback, floral motifs, and, at the center, a face set within a sunburst. This style of shield was part of the Persian influence on Indian culture that was present during the Mughal Empire, which lasted from the 16th to 19th century CE. Size: 18. 5" W (47 cm) . .
